If you are ill while visiting Oxford and the problem cannot wait until your return home, we would be pleased to see you as a temporary patient. This will allow you to receive services from us and still remain a patient of your permanent GP. The maximum stay allowed qualifying as a temporary patient is three months- after that you would have to re-register as a permanent patient.
You must be entitled to NHS care to become a temporary patient. You cannot register as a temporary patient at a practice in the area where you normally live.
It is difficult to make routine referrals for temporary patients and we would normally expect the usual GP to do this.
We need to complete a form (see link below) with various details including your usual GP and NHS number to see you as a temporary patient.
Students at University
NHS rules state that full time University students are deemed to be normally resident at their University address- so they should register with a GP who is able to look after them while they are at University. They are able to see a GP as a temporary patient in the vacation. Oxford University students cannot be ‘temporary’ patients while they are in Oxford.
